The idea that fish is brain food may be more than folklore. In a recent European study of 2,031 elderly men and women, researchers found that those who significantly better on cognitive tests than those who ate little or none. And the more fish the study subjects ate-top performers averaged 2.6 ounces a day-the better they did on the tests, which included measures of memory and attention. A typical serving is four to six ounces, but think beyond fillets and steaks. Enjoy smoked salmon with your morning eggs or add canned tuna to a spicy tomato sauce and serve over pasta. You can also toss minced anchovies in your salad-they add zip without being too fishy.
